cARETTA CARETTA IN THALASSES

Friday, December 16, 2022

Thalasses Rituals (the beach club at Thalasses ) closes at sunset as part of the Caretta caretta protection program that Costa Navarino has implemented in cooperation with Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. Any lights would deter the turtles from leaving the sea to build their nests on the beach, as they have been doing for thousands of years, and would also disorient hatchlings as they attempted to reach the sea for the first time. For the same reason, all lighting units near the beach facilities have been designed with special shields and are masked in part by vegetation.
Did you know? Since 2010, the numbers of sea turtle nests on the beach and hatchlings that reached the sea safely have both risen by more than 400%, thanks to the extensive monitoring and protection program. By 2021, there were no less than 62 nests on our beach, and that year 3,359 hatchlings reached the sea safely.
