From Elafonissi and Balos to Falassarna and Vai, Crete’s spectacular coastline continues to attract travelers from around the world

Crete has countless reasons to remain one of the Mediterranean’s most popular destinations. Its rich history, distinctive cuisine, mountain villages, landscapes and legendary hospitality all contribute to its international appeal. Yet for many travelers, it is the island’s beaches that provide the strongest reason to visit. From the exotic lagoons of western Crete to the secluded shores of the south and the crystal-clear waters of Lassithi in the east, the island offers an extraordinary variety of coastal landscapes. It is therefore no surprise that several Cretan beaches regularly feature among the most impressive in Greece and beyond. According to the Global Beach Index 2026, three beaches in Crete rank among the world’s top 25. Elafonissi takes second place globally and first place in Europe, while Falassarna and Balos rank 14th and 21st respectively.

Elafonissi: The Pink-Tinted Beach at the Top of Europe

On the southwestern coast of Crete, in the Chania region, lies one of Greece’s most recognizable beaches. Elafonissi is famous for its shallow turquoise waters, white sand and distinctive pink hues that appear along parts of the shoreline. A shallow stretch of sea connects the beach with the small island just offshore, creating a landscape that looks more like a tropical destination than a Mediterranean one. The area is also an important protected ecosystem and forms part of the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its environmental significance as well as its natural beauty. Its international reputation reached another milestone in 2026, when Elafonissi ranked second in the world in the Global Beach Index, making it the highest-ranked beach in Europe. For families, nature lovers and travelers looking for an exotic seaside experience without leaving Greece, Elafonissi is difficult to beat.

Balos: A Lagoon Straight from a Postcard

On the Gramvousa peninsula in western Crete lies one of the island’s most photographed landscapes. The Balos Lagoon combines white sand, shallow waters and spectacular shades of blue and green. Seen from above, the lagoon creates one of those unforgettable views that have become synonymous with Crete. Reaching Balos is part of the adventure. Visitors can approach the beach by land or take a boat from Kissamos, turning the journey itself into part of the experience. Balos ranked 21st in the world in the 2026 Global Beach Index, further confirming the international appeal of one of Crete’s most iconic natural landmarks.

Falassarna: The Beach of Unforgettable Sunsets

On Crete’s western coast, Falassarna is one of the most popular seaside destinations in the Chania region. Its long sandy beach, crystal-clear waters and wide-open horizon make it ideal for swimming and relaxation. But what truly sets Falassarna apart is its spectacular sunset. As the sun disappears over the Cretan Sea, the sky changes color and the entire coastline takes on a different atmosphere. It is one of the reasons Falassarna has become a favorite destination for travelers looking to combine a day at the beach with one of nature’s most impressive daily spectacles.

In the 2026 global ranking, Falassarna reached 14th place worldwide, placing it among the leading beaches on the planet.

Preveli: Where the River Meets the Sea

On the southern coast of Crete, in the Rethymno region, Preveli Beach offers a completely different experience. A river flows through the surrounding gorge before reaching the sea, creating a unique landscape of freshwater, lush vegetation and palm trees. The scenery is unlike almost anywhere else on the island. Reaching the beach requires more effort than visiting some of Crete’s easily accessible coastal resorts, but the journey is part of the experience.

Preveli is particularly appealing to travelers who want their beach holiday to include nature, exploration and a sense of adventure.

Vai: Crete’s Famous Palm-Forest Beach

On the eastern side of Crete, in Lassithi, lies Vai, a beach famous for one feature that immediately sets it apart: its spectacular palm forest. The palm trees growing beside the beach create an almost tropical atmosphere. Golden sand, clear blue-green water and dense vegetation come together to form one of the most recognizable landscapes in eastern Crete. For many visitors exploring Lassithi, Vai is an essential stop and one of the island’s most distinctive coastal experiences.

From Matala to Seitan Limania

The list of remarkable Cretan beaches goes far beyond the three beaches included in the 2026 global ranking. Matala, on the southern coast, combines a beautiful beach with history and the famous caves carved into the cliffs. Seitan Limania, near Chania, impresses visitors with its narrow rocky inlet and deep blue waters. Further south, Triopetra offers a more rugged and peaceful coastal setting, while Agiofarago is ideal for travelers looking for a more secluded experience away from the island’s busiest beaches. In Lassithi, Kolokytha and Voulisma are also popular choices, demonstrating just how much variety Crete offers along its coastline.

A Destination with Many Different Stars

The international recognition of Elafonissi, Falassarna and Balos confirms what visitors to Crete have known for years: the island is home to some of the Mediterranean’s most spectacular beaches. But their greatest strength is not simply their beauty. It is their diversity. Elafonissi offers an exotic tropical feel. Balos delivers a breathtaking lagoon landscape. Falassarna is famous for its sunsets, while Vai provides a setting dominated by palm trees. Preveli combines a river, lush vegetation and the sea, while beaches such as Matala and Seitan Limania add history and adventure to the experience. That may ultimately be Crete’s greatest advantage as a tourism destination. Visitors do not have to choose just one “best” beach. Across the island, every coastline offers a different version of Crete.

As summer tourism continues to bring millions of visitors to the island, Crete’s beaches remain one of the strongest pillars of its international appeal. And the latest global rankings simply reinforce what the island has been demonstrating for generations: Crete does not need an introduction. Its beaches speak for themselves — and the world is listening. need an introduction. Its beaches speak for themselves — and the world is listening.

The myth that was born in Crete

The story of Icarus is one of the most famous myths of ancient Greek mythology and is deeply connected with the island of Crete. Icarus was the son of Daedalus, the legendary craftsman who created the Labyrinth for King Minos.

According to Greek mythology, Daedalus and Icarus were imprisoned in Crete and sought a way to escape. Daedalus created two pairs of wings made from feathers and wax, allowing them to fly away. Before their journey began, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too low, where the sea moisture could damage the wings, nor too high, where the heat of the sun could melt the wax.

However, fascinated by the freedom of flight, Icarus flew higher and higher. The heat of the sun melted the wax, his wings fell apart, and he fell into the sea.

The myth of Icarus represents ambition, courage, the desire for freedom, and the importance of balance and wisdom when pursuing our dreams.

The island of myths and legends

Crete is not only famous for its stunning beaches, landscapes, and hospitality. It is also the birthplace of some of the most important stories of Greek mythology.

The Palace of Knossos, King Minos, the Labyrinth, and the legends of Daedalus and Icarus are all connected with the rich cultural heritage of the island. For visitors, a trip to Crete is an opportunity to discover a destination where ancient myths meet history, nature, and authentic local traditions.

Villa Ikaros in Agia Triada, Rethymno

Located in the peaceful village of Agia Triada, Rethymno, Villa Ikaros offers the perfect combination of privacy, comfort, and authentic Cretan surroundings. Surrounded by olive groves and beautiful countryside, the villa is only a short drive from the beaches of northern Crete and the historic city of Rethymno.

With a private swimming pool, spacious outdoor areas, sea views, and modern amenities, Villa Ikaros is an ideal choice for families, couples, and groups looking for a relaxing holiday in Crete.

The name of the villa is inspired by the legendary figure of Icarus. Just as Icarus represents the human desire to explore and experience freedom, Villa Ikaros invites guests to enjoy a unique holiday experience in one of the most beautiful regions of Crete.

Discover Rethymno from villa Ikaros

The location of Villa Ikaros makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the highlights of Rethymno:

The charming Old Town of Rethymno and the Venetian Harbour.

The beautiful sandy beaches along the northern coast.

Traditional Cretan villages surrounded by olive groves.

The historic Arkadi Monastery.

Natural landscapes, hiking routes, and hidden gems of the region.

Guests can enjoy the tranquility of the countryside while remaining close to the most popular attractions and experiences that Rethymno has to offer.

Why choose villa Ikaros for your Crete holiday

Villa Ikaros combines the comfort of a private luxury villa with the authentic character of the Cretan landscape. Its peaceful location, private pool, outdoor spaces, and convenient access to beaches and attractions make it an excellent choice for travelers seeking a memorable stay in Rethymno.

If you are looking for a private villa in Agia Triada, Rethymno, a luxury villa with a pool in Crete, or a peaceful holiday home near Rethymno, Villa Ikaros offers the ideal setting inspired by one of Greece’s most iconic myths.

If, during your stay in Rethymno, you are looking for an experience that combines history, culture, and an authentic Cretan atmosphere, then the War Museum of Rethymno deserves a place on your list of destinations. Located a short distance from the city, in the picturesque village of Chromonastiri, the museum offers visitors the opportunity to explore modern Greek history.

The museum is housed in the impressive Villa Claudio, a 17th-century Venetian mansion that is itself an important architectural monument. The unique architecture of the building, combined with the lush green surroundings of Chromonastiri, creates an atmosphere that takes visitors back in time, even before they begin exploring the museum’s exhibitions.

Inside the museum, the military history of Greece from the Greek War of Independence in 1821 to modern times is presented through a rich collection of exhibits, including military uniforms, weapons, medals, photographs, personal belongings, and historical documents.

Of particular interest is the section dedicated to the Battle of Crete, one of the most significant events of the Second World War. Through valuable archival material and historical artifacts, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the role played by Crete and its people in one of the most decisive battles of modern history.

A visit to the War Museum is not only for those passionate about history. It is an experience that offers knowledge, reflection, and a different perspective on the place you are visiting. Through its collections, visitors gain a better understanding of the historical paths that shaped modern Crete and Greece, developing a more complete picture of the destination.

Another reason to visit the museum is the charm of the surrounding area of Chromonastiri itself. The traditional village, with its stone houses, narrow alleys, and peaceful atmosphere, is an ideal destination for a relaxing walk. After visiting the museum, you can explore the village, enjoy a coffee, or have a meal at a local taverna while discovering a more authentic side of the Cretan countryside.

The short distance from Rethymno city makes the War Museum an ideal choice for a half-day excursion. It combines a cultural experience with the exploration of a beautiful traditional village and is an excellent option for visitors who want to enrich their holiday with something beyond the sea and beaches.

Rethymno hides countless stories behind its monuments and landscapes. The War Museum is one of those places that helps visitors discover them, offering a meaningful experience that remains memorable long after the end of their holiday. If you want to experience Crete on a deeper level and discover an important part of its history, it is worth dedicating a few hours to visiting this special place.

Finding the perfect wedding venue is all about balance. You want the views, the atmosphere, and the freedom to create your dream day, but every venue comes with its own set of realities.

Today, we’re taking you behind the scenes of a gorgeous, intimate wedding we recently hosted in Thalasses Villes, giving you an honest look at what makes this seafront space spectacular, and what you need to consider before booking.

As you can see in image_ca237d.jpg, the venue offers a striking backdrop where a crystal-blue pool meets the open horizon of the sea, framed by minimalist architecture and towering palm trees. It’s a blank canvas for modern elegance.

But is it the right fit for your big day? Let’s break down the pros and cons through the lens of a real couple who brought their dream wedding to life here.

But is it the right fit for your big day? Let’s break down the pros and cons through the lens of a real couple who brought their dream wedding to life here.

The Reality Check: The Cons

Despite the challenges of an outdoor venue, our recent couple curated a flawless, relaxed, and deeply personal celebration for 30 of their closest guests. By leaning into the venue’s strengths, they turned potential limitations into an unforgettable experience.

The Welcome & Cocktail Hour

The celebration kicked off just as the intense afternoon heat began to mellow. Guests arrived at a vibrant welcome cocktail hour. With the open bar flowing and a dedicated photographer capturing the crisp, seaside light, the atmosphere was instantly sophisticated yet laid-back.

The Beachfront Ceremony

Before the poolside festivities began, the couple took full advantage of the venue’s direct access to the shore for their wedding ceremony. With the soft sand underfoot and the rhythmic crashing of the waves as their natural soundtrack, they exchanged vows right on the beach. A minimalist arch framed the vast blue horizon, keeping the focus entirely on the couple. It was a deeply moving, intimate moment that perfectly set the tone for the rest of the unforgettable day.

A Crowd-Pleasing Buffet

When it came to dinner, the couple opted for a relaxed, buffet-style menu. Catering to a diverse group can be tricky, but the buffet perfectly accommodated both their vegan and non-vegan guests without compromising on flavor or style. Setting up the dining tables poolside created an incredibly intimate, communal dining experience right by the water.

Dancing Under the Stars

Once the plates were cleared, the poolside deck transformed into the ultimate open-air dance floor. With the bar keeping the energy high, the couple and their guests danced the night away under a canopy of bistro lights and a clear night sky. The great thing about a smaller guest count of 30 is that nobody feels self-conscious everyone was out on their feet, creating a high-energy, private club vibe right on the water’s edge. Our photographer caught some of the best, most candid shots of the night right here, capturing pure joy against the dark backdrop of the sea.

A Sparkling Finale

Because the venue offers such wide, unobstructed views of the night sky, the couple decided to take full advantage of the dark coastline. As the night drew to a close, a spectacular firework display lit up the sky, reflecting beautifully over the pool and the ocean—a breathtaking exclamation point on an already magical day.

If you are dreaming of a massive, indoor ballroom affair, this isn’t the venue for you. But if you want an intimate, chic, and unforgettable coastal experience where the sea breeze is your soundtrack and the sky is your ceiling, this space is hard to beat.

A recent feature published by the tourism portal Tornos News highlighted the unique character of Rethymno, its Venetian harbour, the historic old town, and the surrounding mountain villages.

The article is a reminder of something deeper: the strength of a destination that has managed to preserve its authenticity.

But Rethymno is not only a beautiful city.

The Venetian old town of Rethymno is one of the most vibrant historical centers in the Mediterranean. Walking through its narrow streets, one can feel centuries of history blending with everyday life, where Venetian architecture, Ottoman influences and modern Cretan culture coexist naturally.

It is an entire region that stretches from the northern Cretan Sea to the mountains of Psiloritis and all the way to the breathtaking landscapes of South Crete.

From the Kourtaliotiko Gorge to the Libyan Sea

Just a short drive south of the city lies one of Crete’s most impressive natural landmarks: the Kourtaliotiko Gorge.

This dramatic gorge, carved between towering cliffs, leads travelers from the mountains toward the Libyan Sea and the unique coastline of southern Crete, including destinations such as Plakias and the surrounding villages. The journey from the Venetian town of Rethymno through the gorge to the southern coast represents the true diversity of the island: mountains, wild nature, traditional villages and pristine beaches.

It is not a destination designed artificially.

It is a place that has evolved naturally through the centuries.

Tourism during a time of global uncertainty

The global tourism sector is currently facing a period of uncertainty. Geopolitical tensions and conflicts in the wider region, including the ongoing war involving Iran, inevitably influence travelers’ confidence and travel decisions.

Everyone hopes that the conflict will end soon. However, even during challenging times like these, Crete – and especially regions such as Rethymno – demonstrate something important: resilience.

Crete has always been a place that knows how to endure.

Throughout its long history, the island has experienced wars, crises and difficult periods. Yet each time it has managed to recover and move forward.

Why Crete remains a strong destination?

One of the reasons Crete remains stable is that it is not built solely on tourism.

The island has:

• strong local communities
• agricultural production and gastronomy
• rich culture and history
• a natural environment that remains authentic

Rethymno, located in the geographical center of the island, connects east and west Crete while also linking the mountains with the sea.

This balance makes it one of the most distinctive regions of the island.

A city that knows what it is

Perhaps the greatest strength of Rethymno is that it does not try to become something it is not.

Unlike destinations created primarily through large-scale development and artificial landscapes, Rethymno has grown organically through centuries of history and culture. Its Venetian harbor, old town alleys, local shops, and everyday life create an atmosphere that cannot easily be replicated. And that may be its greatest advantage today.

In a rapidly changing world, travelers are increasingly looking for places that feel real. Crete offers exactly that.

And Rethymno remains one of its most authentic and resilient expressions.

Positive news for Greece’s real estate market, as the Prime Minister’s announcements at the Thessaloniki International Fair 2025 confirmed that property taxes will remain low throughout 2026. This development creates a stable and favorable environment for both property owners and investors.

The government has decided to keep real estate taxation unchanged, offering predictability and security. This is a significant relief, as property owners can now proceed with renting, renovating, or even bringing properties back onto the market without the fear of additional burdens. At the same time, tax stability makes Greece a more attractive choice for buyers and investors who are seeking a safe and predictable market.

Particularly noteworthy is the special regime introduced for small villages with up to 1,500 residents. In 2026, taxation will be reduced by 50%, while from 2027 property owners in these areas will benefit from a complete exemption. This measure is expected to boost demand for real estate in the countryside, contributing to the revitalization of small villages and creating new opportunities both for permanent residence and for tourism development.

The stability in property taxation strengthens confidence in the Greek market, encourages new purchases and investments, and facilitates long-term planning for both domestic and international buyers.

As the Prime Minister emphasized: “Property taxes will remain low for one more year, offering security and relief to both owners and investors.”
