From Elafonissi and Balos to Falassarna and Vai, Crete’s spectacular coastline continues to attract travelers from around the world

Crete has countless reasons to remain one of the Mediterranean’s most popular destinations. Its rich history, distinctive cuisine, mountain villages, landscapes and legendary hospitality all contribute to its international appeal. Yet for many travelers, it is the island’s beaches that provide the strongest reason to visit. From the exotic lagoons of western Crete to the secluded shores of the south and the crystal-clear waters of Lassithi in the east, the island offers an extraordinary variety of coastal landscapes. It is therefore no surprise that several Cretan beaches regularly feature among the most impressive in Greece and beyond. According to the Global Beach Index 2026, three beaches in Crete rank among the world’s top 25. Elafonissi takes second place globally and first place in Europe, while Falassarna and Balos rank 14th and 21st respectively.

Elafonissi: The Pink-Tinted Beach at the Top of Europe

On the southwestern coast of Crete, in the Chania region, lies one of Greece’s most recognizable beaches. Elafonissi is famous for its shallow turquoise waters, white sand and distinctive pink hues that appear along parts of the shoreline. A shallow stretch of sea connects the beach with the small island just offshore, creating a landscape that looks more like a tropical destination than a Mediterranean one. The area is also an important protected ecosystem and forms part of the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its environmental significance as well as its natural beauty. Its international reputation reached another milestone in 2026, when Elafonissi ranked second in the world in the Global Beach Index, making it the highest-ranked beach in Europe. For families, nature lovers and travelers looking for an exotic seaside experience without leaving Greece, Elafonissi is difficult to beat.

Balos: A Lagoon Straight from a Postcard

On the Gramvousa peninsula in western Crete lies one of the island’s most photographed landscapes. The Balos Lagoon combines white sand, shallow waters and spectacular shades of blue and green. Seen from above, the lagoon creates one of those unforgettable views that have become synonymous with Crete. Reaching Balos is part of the adventure. Visitors can approach the beach by land or take a boat from Kissamos, turning the journey itself into part of the experience. Balos ranked 21st in the world in the 2026 Global Beach Index, further confirming the international appeal of one of Crete’s most iconic natural landmarks.

Falassarna: The Beach of Unforgettable Sunsets

On Crete’s western coast, Falassarna is one of the most popular seaside destinations in the Chania region. Its long sandy beach, crystal-clear waters and wide-open horizon make it ideal for swimming and relaxation. But what truly sets Falassarna apart is its spectacular sunset. As the sun disappears over the Cretan Sea, the sky changes color and the entire coastline takes on a different atmosphere. It is one of the reasons Falassarna has become a favorite destination for travelers looking to combine a day at the beach with one of nature’s most impressive daily spectacles.

In the 2026 global ranking, Falassarna reached 14th place worldwide, placing it among the leading beaches on the planet.

Preveli: Where the River Meets the Sea

On the southern coast of Crete, in the Rethymno region, Preveli Beach offers a completely different experience. A river flows through the surrounding gorge before reaching the sea, creating a unique landscape of freshwater, lush vegetation and palm trees. The scenery is unlike almost anywhere else on the island. Reaching the beach requires more effort than visiting some of Crete’s easily accessible coastal resorts, but the journey is part of the experience.

Preveli is particularly appealing to travelers who want their beach holiday to include nature, exploration and a sense of adventure.

Vai: Crete’s Famous Palm-Forest Beach

On the eastern side of Crete, in Lassithi, lies Vai, a beach famous for one feature that immediately sets it apart: its spectacular palm forest. The palm trees growing beside the beach create an almost tropical atmosphere. Golden sand, clear blue-green water and dense vegetation come together to form one of the most recognizable landscapes in eastern Crete. For many visitors exploring Lassithi, Vai is an essential stop and one of the island’s most distinctive coastal experiences.

From Matala to Seitan Limania

The list of remarkable Cretan beaches goes far beyond the three beaches included in the 2026 global ranking. Matala, on the southern coast, combines a beautiful beach with history and the famous caves carved into the cliffs. Seitan Limania, near Chania, impresses visitors with its narrow rocky inlet and deep blue waters. Further south, Triopetra offers a more rugged and peaceful coastal setting, while Agiofarago is ideal for travelers looking for a more secluded experience away from the island’s busiest beaches. In Lassithi, Kolokytha and Voulisma are also popular choices, demonstrating just how much variety Crete offers along its coastline.

A Destination with Many Different Stars

The international recognition of Elafonissi, Falassarna and Balos confirms what visitors to Crete have known for years: the island is home to some of the Mediterranean’s most spectacular beaches. But their greatest strength is not simply their beauty. It is their diversity. Elafonissi offers an exotic tropical feel. Balos delivers a breathtaking lagoon landscape. Falassarna is famous for its sunsets, while Vai provides a setting dominated by palm trees. Preveli combines a river, lush vegetation and the sea, while beaches such as Matala and Seitan Limania add history and adventure to the experience. That may ultimately be Crete’s greatest advantage as a tourism destination. Visitors do not have to choose just one “best” beach. Across the island, every coastline offers a different version of Crete.

As summer tourism continues to bring millions of visitors to the island, Crete’s beaches remain one of the strongest pillars of its international appeal. And the latest global rankings simply reinforce what the island has been demonstrating for generations: Crete does not need an introduction. Its beaches speak for themselves — and the world is listening. need an introduction. Its beaches speak for themselves — and the world is listening.

The myth that was born in Crete

The story of Icarus is one of the most famous myths of ancient Greek mythology and is deeply connected with the island of Crete. Icarus was the son of Daedalus, the legendary craftsman who created the Labyrinth for King Minos.

According to Greek mythology, Daedalus and Icarus were imprisoned in Crete and sought a way to escape. Daedalus created two pairs of wings made from feathers and wax, allowing them to fly away. Before their journey began, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too low, where the sea moisture could damage the wings, nor too high, where the heat of the sun could melt the wax.

However, fascinated by the freedom of flight, Icarus flew higher and higher. The heat of the sun melted the wax, his wings fell apart, and he fell into the sea.

The myth of Icarus represents ambition, courage, the desire for freedom, and the importance of balance and wisdom when pursuing our dreams.

The island of myths and legends

Crete is not only famous for its stunning beaches, landscapes, and hospitality. It is also the birthplace of some of the most important stories of Greek mythology.

If, during your stay in Rethymno, you are looking for an experience that combines history, culture, and an authentic Cretan atmosphere, then the War Museum of Rethymno deserves a place on your list of destinations. Located a short distance from the city, in the picturesque village of Chromonastiri, the museum offers visitors the opportunity to explore modern Greek history.

The museum is housed in the impressive Villa Claudio, a 17th-century Venetian mansion that is itself an important architectural monument. The unique architecture of the building, combined with the lush green surroundings of Chromonastiri, creates an atmosphere that takes visitors back in time, even before they begin exploring the museum’s exhibitions.

Inside the museum, the military history of Greece from the Greek War of Independence in 1821 to modern times is presented through a rich collection of exhibits, including military uniforms, weapons, medals, photographs, personal belongings, and historical documents.

Of particular interest is the section dedicated to the Battle of Crete, one of the most significant events of the Second World War. Through valuable archival material and historical artifacts, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the role played by Crete and its people in one of the most decisive battles of modern history.

A visit to the War Museum is not only for those passionate about history. It is an experience that offers knowledge, reflection, and a different perspective on the place you are visiting. Through its collections, visitors gain a better understanding of the historical paths that shaped modern Crete and Greece, developing a more complete picture of the destination.

Another reason to visit the museum is the charm of the surrounding area of Chromonastiri itself. The traditional village, with its stone houses, narrow alleys, and peaceful atmosphere, is an ideal destination for a relaxing walk. After visiting the museum, you can explore the village, enjoy a coffee, or have a meal at a local taverna while discovering a more authentic side of the Cretan countryside.

The short distance from Rethymno city makes the War Museum an ideal choice for a half-day excursion. It combines a cultural experience with the exploration of a beautiful traditional village and is an excellent option for visitors who want to enrich their holiday with something beyond the sea and beaches.

Rethymno hides countless stories behind its monuments and landscapes. The War Museum is one of those places that helps visitors discover them, offering a meaningful experience that remains memorable long after the end of their holiday. If you want to experience Crete on a deeper level and discover an important part of its history, it is worth dedicating a few hours to visiting this special place.

Rethymno, with its unique blend of historical charm, cultural richness, and natural beauty, is more than just another picturesque town in Crete, it’s a place that welcomes everyone. In recent years, the Municipality of Rethymno has made great strides toward becoming a truly inclusive city, particularly for visitors with visual impairments. Through thoughtful planning and meaningful infrastructure, Rethymno is opening its streets, beaches, and history to those who experience the world differently.

Throughout the historic center and key cultural landmarks, the city has installed smart signage equipped with QR codes and NFC technology. These allow visually impaired visitors to access audio guides directly on their mobile devices, available in both Greek and English. These narratives do more than provide facts, they bring the city to life, helping the listener “see” Rethymno through sound and story. Tactile maps and Braille signage have also been placed in strategic locations, giving visitors a reliable way to orient themselves and explore independently.

Equally important is the installation of tactile paving throughout central pedestrian zones, leading to essential services, museums, and public institutions. These pathways are designed according to international standards, enabling safer and more confident navigation for individuals who are blind or have low vision.

Rethymno has also taken significant steps to ensure its beaches are accessible. Specialized equipment, support services, and the involvement of trained volunteers make it possible for people with disabilities to enjoy the sea safely and with dignity. This isn’t just about meeting accessibility guidelines, it’s about truly opening up one of Crete’s greatest treasures to all.

Beyond infrastructure, Rethymno is cultivating a culture of inclusion. Increasingly, local festivals and cultural events, such as the Renaissance Festival, are incorporating audio description and accessible tours. The people of Rethymno, from local business owners to cultural workers and volunteers, are actively involved in making the city more welcoming and understanding of different abilities.

Here, hospitality isn’t just a slogan, it’s a way of life. For a traveler with visual impairment, visiting Rethymno is not only possible but deeply meaningful. It’s a destination where autonomy, respect, and genuine connection meet, making every moment not just accessible, but memorable.

In the heart of the village of Agia Paraskevi, just a few kilometers southeast of the town of Rethymno, stands the Church of Saint Paraskevi—one of the most significant religious and historical landmarks of the area. The church is dedicated to Saint Paraskevi, a revered Orthodox saint known as the protector of eyesight and the sick.

The church dates back to the late Byzantine or early post-Byzantine period and preserves architectural elements that reflect traditional Cretan ecclesiastical design. It is a modest yet imposing structure that radiates a deep sense of reverence. Inside, fragments of old frescoes are still visible, and a beautifully carved wooden iconostasis stands out, showcasing the artistry of local folk craftsmanship.

Saint Paraskevi holds a special place in the hearts of the villagers. Every year on July 26th, the day of her feast, a solemn Divine Liturgy is held, drawing in worshippers from the village and surrounding areas. This is followed by a traditional village celebration, featuring local music, food, and dancing—a vibrant expression of Cretan culture and community spirit.

More than just a religious building, the Church of Saint Paraskevi represents a vital piece of the village’s cultural heritage. It serves as a place of faith, historical memory, and communal gathering for both locals and visitors seeking spiritual peace and authentic tradition.

The Minoan Palaces of Crete have been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, sealing the pivotal role of Minoan civilization in global history. This decision, made during this year’s session of the World Heritage Committee (12/07/2025), marks the culmination of long-standing efforts by the Greek state and the academic community.

The recognition includes the four emblematic palatial complexes of the Minoan era, located in Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros. These architectural and cultural marvels, constructed more than 3,500 years ago, are evidence of an advanced and deeply sophisticated civilization, the first organized civilization in Europe.

According to UNESCO, the Minoan palaces represent a unique combination of art, technology, and urban planning, with influence that extended beyond the island of Crete to Egypt and the Near East. The inscription was accompanied by particularly positive remarks regarding the preservation of the sites, as well as Greece’s ongoing efforts to showcase and protect its cultural heritage.

The inclusion of the Minoan Palaces in the World Heritage List is not merely symbolic. It enhances Crete’s visibility as a cultural tourism destination, increases funding opportunities for the conservation and promotion of the sites, and places them within a global framework of monitoring and protection.

Crete, with its deep history and rich mythology, now holds another prestigious distinction. The Minoan Palaces are not simply archaeological sites, they are living witnesses of history and identity, continuing to inspire and captivate people around the world.

The armed conflict in the region of Israel and broader unrest in the Arab world are already having significant effects on Greek tourism, while simultaneously creating new opportunities in the real estate sector. As a result of this geopolitical uncertainty the country’s tourism landscape reshaping where arrivals from specific markets are now boosting in investment activity throughout Greece and Cyprus.

Tourism: Rise in Arrivals, but Setback from the Middle East and Gulf Region

Despite a general increase in international air arrivals of 5.9% during January–May 2025 (6.3 million passengers). In May alone, international arrivals reached 3.0 million, up by +153,000 compared to 2024. The high-end tourism market though, is experiencing a downturn, particularly in destinations heavily reliant on markets from the Middle East and Israel. Crete remains the top destination with 1.0 million arrivals (+5.6%), followed by the Dodecanese and Ionian Islands. However, areas like Elounda are seeing last-minute cancellations in luxury hotels due to some Arab clients’ displeasure over hotel group affiliations with Israel.

Israel, which traditionally represents approximately 2% of arrivals to Greece, has shown a notable drop in bookings. Thessaloniki, along with Rhodes, Crete, and Kos, have taken a hard hit due to cancellations. According to INSETE, in 2022, arrivals from Israel reached 490,000 and generated €400 million in revenue—figures expected to drop considerably this year.

Revenues: General Increase, but Decline from Key European Markets

Despite pressure from the Middle East, total travel revenues rose by +10.6% during January–April 2025, reaching €2.157 billion. The majority of this increase came from tourists from non-EU-27 countries (+26%), who contributed €1.040 billion.

In contrast, revenues from EU-27 residents fell by -1.8%, while income from eurozone countries declined by -5.7%. Notable declines came from France (-25%) and Italy (-6.6%), while Germany remained stable (+0.8%), and the UK (+23.4%) and USA (+36.8%) showed impressive growth.

Real Estate: Investment “Boom” from Israel into Cyprus and Greece

While the tourism sector shows mixed trends, real estate is clearly on the rise, especially with Israeli investors. Against the backdrop of regional insecurity, there is a strong movement of capital toward Cyprus—where land and property are being purchased in bulk—and toward stable markets in Greece such as Athens, Crete, and Thessaloniki.

The U.S. base in Souda, coupled with Greece’s geostrategic importance, further strengthens the country’s profile as a secure investment destination, despite geopolitical tensions.

Short-Term Rentals: Rapid Growth in Supply and Beds

Tourism pressure is gradually shifting toward short-term rentals, which are steadily rising. In May 2025, there were 236,000 rental properties listed—an increase of +18,000 compared to 2024. Additionally, available beds surpassed 1 million already in April, compared to July in 2024.

The rise in Airbnb-style rentals reflects the demand for alternative forms of accommodation, as well as the market’s adaptation to new demand conditions.

Conclusion: Diverging Trends – Adaptation or Risk?

The 2025 tourism season is marked by multiple speeds. On the one hand, the overall increase in arrivals and revenues offers a positive outlook. On the other, geopolitical tensions are causing losses in key markets, affecting high-value destinations.

At the same time, the property sector acts as a safe haven for foreign investments, especially from Israel, at a time when tourism activity is undergoing transformation.

Greece is now called upon to balance between instability and opportunity, building

resilience and diversifying its target markets for the future.

Συμπέρασμα: Αντίρροπες τάσεις – προσαρμογή ή ρίσκο;

Dittany of Crete, scientifically known as Origanum dictamnus, is a unique plant native to the island of Crete and is considered one of the most valuable and versatile herbs of Greek nature. It boasts a rich therapeutic profile, with anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, healing, tonic, and antispasmodic properties, making it particularly useful for a wide range of ailments and discomforts. Traditionally, it has been used to relieve stomach disorders, headaches, toothaches, and to promote the healing of wounds and injuries.

Its anti-inflammatory action helps combat both internal and external inflammations, while its antiseptic properties make it effective against bacteria and viruses. Its healing power supports the natural regeneration of the skin and accelerates wound healing, while its antispasmodic effect provides relief from muscle spasms and cramps. In addition, it has antioxidant properties that protect cells from free radical damage, digestive properties that aid in digestion and reduce stomach discomfort, and hemostatic properties that help stop bleeding.

Dittany’s tonic effect on the nervous system boosts vitality and endurance, while its potential antidiabetic action may assist in regulating blood sugar levels. Notably, it is also used to combat bad breath, as chewing its leaves offers fresh breath and helps fight bacteria in the oral cavity. The most common way to consume dittany is as an herbal infusion, made with hot water and dried leaves, offering a natural and pleasant way to benefit from its many properties. Combining traditional use with scientifically confirmed benefits, Origanum dictamnus remains a precious herb with a significant place in natural medicine and daily wellness.

Its unique properties make it highly effective and powerful against fungi, bacteria, and viruses, making it an ideal natural ally for boosting the immune system, protecting cardiovascular health, and maintaining overall health and well-being.
